What a week! With the best laid plans in tatters due to some rather savage weather, we rallied and looked hard for alternatives. My client Oliver from Sydney is really positive bloke, and with his new 3wt Kubuto Japanese fibreglass rod along with the usual Sage 5wt and a 10′ 6wt,we had a thoroughly enjoyable time. A revelation for me was that we had plenty of occasions to use the 3wt, with small dries, long leaders and delicate presentations resulting in plenty of cracking browns up to 5 1/2 pounds. We also landed some larger fish on small mayfly nymphs using the 5wt, and the 10′ came into it’s own when the wind roared.
With a rest day today, it’s a pleasure to look over the most memorable moments of the trip. For me, sandwiched in between some excellent conversations with Oliver, was a very large fish that erupted in a spray of water when hooked, and seemed to hang in mid air before throwing the hook and crashing back to freedom, as well as another large brown that chased our beetle down after an excellent presentation using the 3wt, only to make elusive contact for a few seconds before the hook pulled.
Here’s some of the 40 odd fish that made it to the net.
