Last week I was pleased to see a good number of rainbow trout in our inflowing river mouths, encouraged by the clean water and cold temperatures.
While I wouldn’t classify them as voracious feeders this time of year, if you get a fly close enough, they’ll have a look and a subtle taste – it’s easy to miss this time of year, and usually seeing the mouth of the trout is vital to detecting the take – it’s a bit easier with the browns as the inside of their mouth is bright white, and quite obvious when it opens!
A couple of novice anglers had a nice day on Wednesday after some intensive casting tuition on grass, followed with a visit to a river where plenty of opportunities presented themselves. After a few near misses and hard luck stories, we finally landed a lovely 4.75lb rainbow near the end of the day, which was a very satisfying finish to their first effort fly fishing.
It is totally worth going out for a day fly fishing this time of year if the weather is kind.
